What does checkout / checking out materials mean?

Borrowing library materials using a Brown ID. In most cases, you will look the book up in BruKnow, the library catalog, find the call number, and then get the book from the shelf yourself and bring it to the circulation desk to check it out. For books stored offsite, you will need to request them through BruKnow. You'll receive an email when they are ready to pick up at Circulation. John Hay materials cannot be checked out. You will need to make an appointment to look at those in the Special Collections Reading Room.
