I want to translate a published work. What do I need to do?

Answer

You need to find out who owns the copyright to the work you want to translate. This is very often not the author, but the publisher. Works that are in the public domain do not require permission to be translated. For a full discussion of this issue, see this detailed FAQ put together by Pen America.
